But unlike the clear-cut good-versus-evil pleasure of the first film's righteous violence meted upon nasty criminals, it's not clear who's meant to enjoy seeing decent, economically squeezed people being tortured.

He also called Home Alone "a film which manages to capture some of the best qualities of Christmas". John Candy was available for only one day to film his scenes, which took 23 hours to shoot. In return, he was the only actor Hughes allowed to go off-script; according to Columbus, all his dialogue was improvised. On Christmas Day, Kevin is initially disappointed to find that his family is still gone, although Kate arrives home and they reconcile.
